Message From Our Priest-in-charge

The Rev. M. Joanna White
Priest-in-charge |
Sherwood Church is in the process of re-evaluating its ministry and mission and is attempting to do so through the lens of the Baptismal Covenant. The first part of the covenant is the familiar Nicene Creed that we say each Sunday. The remainder of the covenant describes our proper response to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
We meet as one people, consuming one bread around one altar. We understand that our corporate worship strengthens us and by our actions, heals the world around us. We have also learned that this unity of spirit has produced a community able to nourish and support each other through the common ventures of life-and we do it exceptionally well.
Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
We are all broken people in a broken world. The beauty of our corporate worship and Christian Education is that it allows us insight into our frailties and, with the help of God and each other, we can be transformed. As a parish, we stand over and against all attempts of an insensitive society to cause pain through greed and a quest for power.
Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?
Sherwood has a lively and loving Outreach program that is energized and informed by the gospel.
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?
Like any group of diverse individuals, we have our own ideas of what justice and peace look like. While we seem to fall into almost equal liberal and conservative camps, we work well together for the good of the parish as well as the wider community because our differences never become divisions.
I feel that this is who we are. While it’s easy to write out a document of our beliefs, it’s impossible to adequately capture all the love, good will and fun we experience with each other. We invite you to see that for yourself! Come for a visit or a lifetime!
