Greg Szczeszek has been Music Director/Organist at Sherwood since April 2001. Prior to coming to Sherwood, Mr. Szczeszek was the Assistant Organist at Christ Lutheran Church, Inner Harbor, from 1993-2001 under Dr. Paul Davis. He trained at the Royal Academy of Music, London, in addition to the Oundle International Festival for Organists, having studied with Christopher Herrick, organ, and Martin Baker, Composition/Improvisation. Mr. Szczeszek is an accomplished baritone, having been soloist for works including Brahms’ Requiem, Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, Schubert’s Mass in G, as well as several performances of Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. He has had roles in Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, Mozart’s Magic Flute, and Bizet’s Carmen, having sung with the Municipal Opera Company. In 2005, Mr. Szczeszek and mezzo-soprano Megan Amoss gave a recital for the benefit of the Baltimore International Seafarer’s Center. Under his direction, a service of Lessons and Carols in the English tradition has come to be part of the Christmas services at Sherwood.

At Sherwood, Mr. Szczeszek brings together a love of plain chant, great hymnody, and the simple beauty of Anglican liturgy, and attempts to employ music from many appropriate genres. A diverse musical palate is offered, including the music of Healey Willan, J.S. Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, Aaron Copland, American Spirituals, Calvin Hampton, Mozart, T. Tertius Noble, American Country and Gospel Revival. One of the highlights of the program was Country Music Hall of Fame artist Mark Brine and players, and their rendition of “May the Circle be unbroken” during morning Eucharist. The Sherwood Choir is one of his chief delights!

The Sherwood Choir is a volunteer organization. The Choir sings from September-June during the calendar year.  They rehearse alternating Sunday mornings and Monday evenings.  Membership requirements include the capacity for self-deprecating humor, enjoyment of music, and telling the director ahead of time when you will be absent.  We are always looking for new members, contact Greg Szczeszek (410) 578-0987, or just come early to church and start singing.  We have plenty of robes!
